What Spray Foam Insulation Costs in Binghamton, NY

What spray foam actually costs in Binghamton, itemized, with a worked 2,000 sq ft example and the measurement trap that makes quotes differ by thousands.

Open-cell spray foam runs $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot installed and closed-cell runs $3.00 to $5.00. A typical attic lands between $3,000 and $8,000, a crawl space between $2,000 and $4,000, and a rim joist around $2,000 to $2,500.

Those ranges are wide, and the width is what this article is about. Two contractors quoting the same house can arrive at numbers that differ by a factor of three, and most of the time neither of them is being dishonest. They are quoting different assemblies, measured different ways.


The measurement trap, and it is the whole game

Spray foam is priced on treated surface area. “My house is 2,000 square feet” is floor area. These are different numbers and they are not proportional.

Take a 2,000 square foot two-story house and ask three contractors to quote “the attic.”

  • Contractor A quotes the attic floor. Floor area of the attic in a two-story house is roughly the footprint, so about 1,000 square feet.
  • Contractor B quotes the roofline with a moderate pitch, so the sloped surface is roughly 1,200 to 1,400 square feet, plus gable ends.
  • Contractor C quotes the roofline in a one-and-a-half-story house with knee walls and sloped ceilings, and the developed surface can approach 1,800 square feet.

Three quotes, three areas, potentially three different products and depths. The spread between them will be enormous and none of them is wrong. They are proposals for different work.

The two questions that resolve it: what surface area is this based on, and which plane are you spraying? Ask both of every quote and the comparison becomes possible.

Note that closed-cell is not simply the expensive version. At R-5 to R-7 per inch versus R-3.5 to R-3.7, closed-cell delivers roughly 1.6 times the R per inch, so on a per unit of R basis the gap narrows considerably. Where closed-cell genuinely costs more is where you do not need what it does, which is vapor control and rigidity.


Worked example: a 2,000 square foot Binghamton house

Why Option A is the right answer for this house: the attic is simple, open, and has no ductwork in it. There is no reason to bring it inside the envelope, and the ceiling plane can genuinely be made continuous. Option B costs $1,700 more and buys a conditioned attic this owner has no use for.

Where Option B becomes correct: ductwork or an air handler in the attic, knee walls and sloped ceilings, or a ceiling below with too many penetrations to seal reliably. Then A is the cheaper mistake.

Every driver, and roughly what it does

Treated surface area. The base number. Ask which surface.

Which plane. On an attic, the biggest single variable. Roofline is usually larger than attic floor, sometimes by 50% or more.

Depth. Foam is sold by the board foot. Three inches costs 50% more than two. The required depth follows from the assembly and the code, not from budget.

Open cell versus closed cell. Roughly double the material rate. The assembly decides.

Access and staging. The rig has a finite hose length. A building the truck cannot get near, or a space a long way from where the hose enters, costs more. On pole barns this is a bigger factor than people expect.

Masking and containment. Substantially more in an occupied house than an empty building. On a pole barn, minimal, because the doors open.

Removal of existing material. $0.75 to $2.00 per square foot. Vermiculite is a special case requiring specialist assessment for asbestos content before anything is disturbed, and it is not a line item, it is a different project.

Number of setups. Two disconnected areas in one visit costs more than one continuous run.

Occupancy. Occupants have to be out during application and for the interval on the product data sheet. In a rental, that means scheduling between tenancies, which can be the binding constraint on the whole job.

Substrate temperature. In deep winter, a steel deck or an unheated space may be outside the product’s application temperature range, and heating the building to bring it into range is a real cost. Spraying anyway produces off-ratio foam, which is worse than not doing the job.


What state incentives take off the top

Comfort Home, the market-rate program:

  • $2,000 additional for ENERGY STAR windows afterwards

EmPower+, income-qualified: no-cost improvements capped at $12,000 per project upstate for low-income households, or 50% up to $6,000 for moderate-income households.

HEAR: up to $1,600 for combined air sealing, insulation, and ventilation.

The catch on all of them: they require a NYSERDA participating contractor. Your eligibility depends on who you hire, not on what the work is. Sort that out before you get attached to a contractor.

Is foam worth it compared to fiberglass or cellulose?

Not on a per-square-foot basis, and often not on a simple R-value payback either. Foam costs several times what batts or blown cellulose cost.

What foam does that they do not is air seal in the same application. In a heating-dominated climate like Broome County’s, with 83 inches of snow a year and freezing temperatures from November through April, air leakage rather than R-value is frequently the dominant heat loss path. That is where foam earns the difference.

The honest decision rule: if your house is leaky, foam addresses something batts cannot, and the money is well spent. If your house is already reasonably tight and you simply want more R-value in an accessible attic, blown cellulose is a fraction of the cost and perfectly good, and you should buy that instead.

A hybrid is often the best value and it is what the worked example above uses: foam as the air barrier at the plane, cellulose over the top for depth. You pay for foam where foam is doing something only foam can do, and you pay cellulose rates for the rest.


What a quote should contain

  • The treated surface area and which surface it is
  • The plane, on an attic job
  • The product name and manufacturer, with the technical data sheet attached
  • The depth, in inches
  • The R-value the assembly achieves
  • Open cell or closed cell, and why
  • The vapor control strategy, particularly if open-cell is proposed at a roof deck in this climate zone
  • Removal of existing material, as a separate line
  • The containment plan and the re-entry interval from the data sheet
  • What is excluded
  • The warranty, its duration, and what voids it
